Backstage News On The Beast Mortos’ AEW Grand Slam: Mexico Appearance

Wednesday’s AEW Grand Slam: Mexico event featured a last-minute shake-up in the main event, as The Beast Mortos stepped in to replace Claudio Castagnoli of The Death Riders in a high-stakes 10-man tag team match.

According to Fightful Select, AEW President and CEO Tony Khan personally reached out to Salvador Lutteroth Lomelí to secure permission for Mortos’ participation. The switch came as AEW had to adjust plans due to the unavailability of both Cash Wheeler and Castagnoli. Fortunately, CMLL was reportedly very cooperative and helped facilitate Mortos’ inclusion.

The match marked Mortos’ first bout at Arena Mexico in 14 years, with his last appearance at the iconic venue dating back to 2011. Since joining AEW in 2024, Mortos has competed in several standout matches across AEW and ROH, frequently appearing in trios matches and high-profile singles contests. He also became part of a revamped La Facción Ingobernable later that year, teaming with RUSH and Dralístico.
