As seen on WWE SmackDown this week, Cody Rhodes appears to have stepped aside for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to face Roman Reigns at WWE Wrestlemania 40. The Vince McMahon sex trafficking lawsuit, WWE canceling creative plans for Brock Lesnar, and CM Punk’s injury were all cited as reasons for the change in plans.

According to Mike Johnson of, Cody is currently scheduled to face World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40. Johnson speculated on when Cody could “finish the story” and win the title his father Dusty had never held.

“The reality is this: while the story was primed to climax at Wrestlemania 40, there were already some in the company openly talking about the idea of Cody winning the World Heavyweight Championship and then challenging the winner of Roman vs. Rock for Summerslam in a title unification bout so that Cody could finally, really, we promise this time, finish the story.”

As previously stated, fans have criticized the change on various social media platforms. Fans have remained vocal on Twitter/X, with “WE WANT CODY” becoming a trending topic on Saturday.
