Cody Rhodes’ Babyface Run May Be Nearing Its End

Cody Rhodes is well aware that his current run as one of wrestlingโ€™s most beloved babyfaces may not last forever, and heโ€™s already contemplating what comes next.

During a recent interview with Kay Adams, Rhodes opened up about his public perception, the longevity of being the โ€œnice guy,โ€ and how a potential character shift might unfold in todayโ€™s wrestling climate.

โ€œI donโ€™t ever get tired of it, because you get to have all of this in these moments,โ€ Rhodes said about being a fan-favorite. โ€œBut I do think weโ€™re probably at the tail end of it, though, because thereโ€™s only so much someone can like you.โ€

Rhodes acknowledged the natural evolution of characters in wrestling, hinting that a turn could be inevitable โ€” but only under the right circumstances.

โ€œI would love to do it till the end of my career, but thereโ€™s only so much. Itโ€™s like, โ€˜All right, we cheer for them.โ€™ At a certain point, they want to see somebody else. I get that. Thatโ€™s where you have to change as a character.โ€

He believes thereโ€™s a limited timeframe for this kind of role to remain effective:

โ€œI think you have a good, solid year โ€” maybe even three years,โ€ he explained. โ€œBecause again, I am not changing until Iโ€™m changed. If that makes any sense.โ€

Rhodes also described what a true heel turn would look like in the modern era, and itโ€™s not just about turning up the attitude:

โ€œYouโ€™ll know because X and Instagram will hate it. Because today heels are like, โ€˜Oh, thatโ€™s a cool heel.โ€™ Weโ€™re loving John Cena, no. If youโ€™re burying it and hate it and talking about how you donโ€™t want it on your TV, thatโ€™s what an actual bad guy is.โ€

Interestingly, Rhodes also revealed that The Rock has already planted seeds for such a transition behind the scenes.

โ€œIf The Rock had it his way, I would have been changed already. So I think he sees something that maybe I donโ€™t see, and thatโ€™s a very smart individual. So maybe I follow his lead. Maybe not.โ€

Despite their heated on-screen feud earlier this year, Rhodes had high praise for The Final Bossโ€™s career and generosity:

โ€œHeโ€™s doingโ€ฆ got a good series of A24 movies coming out. As a wrestler growing up in the business, Iโ€™m just excited those opportunities are there for him. And I think itโ€™s no secret heโ€™s been very helpful, kind of procuring some opportunities for me as well โ€” that I never dreamed of in a million years. So Iโ€™m all for The Rock.โ€

As Codyโ€™s reign at the top continues, fans may want to savor the โ€œAmerican Nightmareโ€ in his current form, because as he hinted, change may be closer than anyone expects.
