Is it time for Conor McGregor to join WWE?

Following his defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264, infamous MMA fighter Conor McGregor is at a crossroads in his career. Never before has the man known as ‘Notorious’ suffered two consecutive losses in the UFC Octagon.

As he considers his next move, the Irishman must also fully recover from the broken leg that forced him to retire early from that encounter. Poirier moves on but McGregor will surely consider other options, including a potential move across to WWE.

Unhappy Ending

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier looked to be evenly matched when they stepped into the ring at UFC 264. In two previous encounters between the two fighters, the results stood at one victory apiece. Poirier’s immediate form was marginally better and the best betting sites at sbo.net listed the American as the narrow favorite.

The fight could have been close but McGregor’s unfortunate accident means that we will never know how it might have ended. The MMA bandwagon moves on with UFC 265 on the horizon and those sportsbooks linked to sbo.net will provide a full set of markets once again.

Along with those odds, there will be opinion pieces and news updates on MMA in general and there will be plenty of betting sites on hand with welcome offers for those who want to take things a step further. All of those sites can be expected to provide a choice of funding options and swift customer service.

UFC rolls on as we can see but will Conor McGregor ever be a part of their future plans?

All the Options

He may feel sorry for himself right now but McGregor has no shortage of options when it comes to a future outside of the Octagon. Former champion heavyweight boxer Floyd Mayweather seems amenable to a rematch of their 2017 encounter while YouTuber Jake Paul has $50 million dollars to prove that he’s ready to step into the ring with ‘Notorious’.

His accident at UFC 264 has also woken up the world of professional wrestling. Big E is the latest to offer his views on the situation and he spoke at length about the MMA fighter. Ultimately, Big E feels that the Irishman will remain with UFC but he acknowledges that McGregor would receive a lot of attention.

The current WWE grappler also conceded that he felt it would be worth investing in ‘Notorious’ and that he would have no problem with him signing up.

We’ve Been Here Before

This isn’t the first time that Conor McGregor has been linked with a move to WWE and rumour will persist until he either makes that switch or retires from professional sport. Back in July 2020, the Irishman called out Vince McMahon as he teased a potential change of codes.

He was officially retired at that point in his career and, in a controversial Instagram post, he also tagged McMahon’s daughter Stephanie as he hinted at the changeover.

Many years earlier, back in 2016, Conor McGregor was at the height of his MMA career and he was far more confrontational as he used the word ‘dweebs’. It was an inflammatory post and it gained a predictable reaction. As a result, a number of wrestlers appear to have taken some enjoyment from McGregor’s unfortunate exit at UFC 264. Biting the hand that could potentially feed you further down the line may not have been a wise move on Conor McGregor’s part.

The Verdict

Would wrestling fans welcome the entrance of Conor McGregor? The MMA fighter is a man who splits opinion with his confrontational nature and it’s useful to look at a comparison with Tyson Fury. The boxer known as the Gypsy King enjoyed his first foray into WWE and he slotted in perfectly to the nature of the sport.

Fury has an edge to his character but he appears happy to be cast as a ‘pantomime villain.’ With McGregor, that edge to his nature can often cross a line and it’s maybe tough to see him playing ball with the organisation.

Big E summed it up when he talks about legal issues so there is a long way to go before Conor McGregor finally joins the WWE roster.
