Looking Ahead To Survivor Series

In an ever-changing world, it’s nice to know that you can rely upon calendar events and WWE fans will be able to brave the chills of November by remembering what that time of the year means in the wrestling industry. Survivor Series is the longest-running pay-per-view event in the company’s history (only behind Wrestlemania) and one of the original four events produced by WWE (Royal Rumble and SummerSlam being the other two not yet mentioned). The gimmick hook of Survivor Series has always been elimination tag-team matches.

There have been slight deviations from that formula over the years – 2002, for example, ditched the format in favour of the introduction of the Elimination Chamber, which, as the name implies, also has a heavy elimination element – but this has largely been the centrepiece of a Survivor Series event. The brand split of 2016 saw a major change to the format which pitted wrestlers from Raw and SmackDown against each other with little more than brand pride being on the line. It allows fans to bear witness to champion-vs-champion matches throughout the card, making it one of the most entertaining events of the year almost by definition.

Team NXT entered the mix last year and humbled both established brands but they aren’t involved at this juncture. With the event almost a month away, we’re yet to find out the team players for the fights between Raw and Smackdown.

For anyone considering a wager on this event, it is instead better to consider the bouts between champions. It is unlikely that any champion will defend their belt before Survivor Series with WWE instead using this time to promote the hell out of their premier November event. Of those fights, the most eye-catching is WWE Champion Randy Orton (Raw) versus Universal Champion Roman Reigns (SmackDown). These two have a lot of history and should put on an entertaining scrap.
