Road Dogg on How the Women’s Royal Rumble Started, Now Knowing Who Shinsuke Nakamura Was, Heath Slater

The latest episode of the “Oh, You Didn’t Know?” podcast features WWE Senior Vice President of Live Events “Road Dogg” Brian James discussing the 2018 WWE Royal Rumble. This was the first year for the Women’s Royal Rumble match.

Who first thought of having a Women’s Royal Rumble:

“I don’t think it was one person. I thought it was a collaborative decision. I really don’t know who the first person to ever think of it was. You’d have to go back pretty far, but it was time and everybody knew it. The point is equality in every way. It should have been happening years ago.”

Not knowing Shinsuke Nakamura when Nakamura first came to WWE:

“I’ll be honest with you. I’m not a huge fan of Japanese wrestling. I just haven’t been and I haven’t followed it, so I didn’t know of Nakamura. I’ve heard his name, but I didn’t know anything about him. So when he got over here, I’m thinking, okay, Shinsuke Nakamura. When I saw him and Sami Zayn work in NXT, it hit me like a ton of bricks. That’s what everybody’s talking about. That right there, and yeah, he was incredible.”

Heath Slater:

“He’s great. He’s always great. I put the titles on him and Rhino when I first took over SmackDown. They were the first tag champs. I love Heath. He’s a great guy. He’s funny. He can work. He’s still doing good stuff, just not in our company.”
