As seen on last week’s WWE SmackDown, Cody Rhodes appears to have stepped aside for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to face Roman Reigns at WWE WrestleMania 40.
It is believed that a match against Reigns was part of Rock’s agreement to join the TKO Board of Directors.
Sources told Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com that Rock is “100% performing in the ring” at WrestleMania 40 and that the deal is finalized. Johnson was told that there is “no scenario” in which Rock would not face Reigns unless something unforeseen occurred, such as an injury.
Johnson also stated that the plan was never to turn Rock heel, but the company could change plans. Johnson stated as follows:
“Some we spoke with believe that now that the shock of Rock coming into the storylines can wear off, creative can lock in ways to build everyone as strong as possible leading into Wrestlemania season. We are told anything is on the table creatively as they map Mania season out. There is absolutely no one in the company on the creative end that wants any of this to dilute Cody’s standing.”
During the February 5th, 2024 edition of RAW, Michael Cole stated on commentary that Rock and Reigns are “perhaps” on a collision course for a match at WrestleMania, before plugging Thursday’s Kickoff show.
