Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a new film project in the works.
The Hollywood Reporter reported on Wednesday that the former WWE star is set to play an MMA fighter in a drama from A24, the same studio that produced “The Iron Claw,” a film about the rise and fall of the Von Erich family.
Rock will work with “Uncut Gems” director Benny Safdie on “The Smashing Machine,” in which he will play Mark Kerr, a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion. The project was also written by Safdie.
HBO aired a documentary titled “The Smashing Machine” in 2002, which detailed his professional career and rise in MMA, as well as his addiction to painkillers, which resulted in an overdose. Kerr earned the moniker “The Smashing Machine” for his fighting style.
The film will also be produced by Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions, Safdie’s Out for the Count banner, Eli Bush, and David Koplan.
Other projects in the works for Rock include Red Notice 2 on Netflix and the Amazon action comedy Red One.
