At Payback, the WWE United States Championship will be on the line.
WWE has announced that Rey Mysterio, a 2023 Hall of Famer and WWE United States Champion, will defend his title against Austin Theory during Labor Day Weekend. Theory earned the title shot after defeating LA Knight on the August 18 SmackDown show, thanks to The Miz’s interference.
This will be Mysterio’s first title defense and only his second match since winning the title from Theory on SmackDown on August 11. Theory’s third fight since the title change.
Payback will be Theory and Mysterio’s third televised singles match. Theory defeated Mysterio twice, first on November 1, 2021, and then again on April 3, 2023. Their third and most recent match was the title change on SmackDown on August 11.
The PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania will host the 2023 WWE Payback Premium Live Event on Saturday, September 2.
