AEW star and pro wrestling veteran Shelton Benjamin recently spoke with Maven on his YouTube channel about a variety of topics. One of the highlights of their discussion was when he won his first WWE Intercontinental Championship from Chris Jericho at Taboo Tuesday in 2004.
Benjamin said, โFrom this moment here, I am officially overachieving as a WWE Superstar, as far as my perception of where my career was going. Growing up in South Carolina, I always watched wrestling. I loved wrestling. However, there was not a lot of black singles champions, not saying there werenโt any, but I saw more championships on black tag teams than on black singles.โ
On his perception when he joined WWE:
โSo when I joined WWE, my perception was, โOh, itโd be great if I can win the Tag Team Championship there.โ Iโm not thinking about World Titles. Iโm not thinking about US Titles or Intercontinental Titles. So when I won this, Iโm literally going, โIโve officially overachieved my own goals.โ
