WWE has officially filed a new trademark with potentially big implications for future programming. On May 18, the company submitted an application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to secure the rights to the term “King Of The Luchadores.”
The filing falls under the entertainment services classification and includes the standard language associated with WWE programming and branding:
“Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment via an online community portal; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information; fan club services, namely, organizing sporting events in the field of wrestling for wrestling fan club members; organizing social entertainment events for entertainment purposes for wrestling fan club members; providing online newsletters in the fields of sports entertainment; online journals, namely blogs, in the field of sports entertainment.”
While WWE has not publicly announced plans for a “King Of The Luchadores” event, the name has already sparked fan speculation. Many see the potential for a lucha libre-style tournament, similar in spirit to WWE’s classic King of the Ring format, but designed to spotlight premier luchadors—Mexican-style high-flying wrestlers—within the WWE roster or even through international talent partnerships.
The company has steadily expanded its global branding and content offerings, including showcasing international talent like Rey Mysterio, Santos Escobar, Dragon Lee, and more. A tournament honoring lucha libre’s heritage and athletic style could serve as both a fan-favorite event and a deeper push into Latin American and Hispanic markets.
As of now, WWE has not commented further on the trademark or any related programming.
