Dave Meltzer has clarified the circumstances surrounding Kairi Sane’s release from World Wrestling Entertainment, pushing back on reports that she had personally asked to leave the company.

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer explained that his earlier comments on Wrestling Observer Radio were misinterpreted by some outlets. While he had noted that Sane may have had long-term plans to return to Japan, that was incorrectly reported as her requesting her release — a claim Sane later disputed publicly.

According to Meltzer, WWE’s internal belief that Sane might eventually relocate to Japan factored into the decision.

“Part of it was the belief she wanted to move back to Japan at some point, and with that knowledge it was part of the decision making.”

The release came as a surprise to many, particularly given that Sane was actively involved in an ongoing storyline alongside Asuka and IYO SKY at the time. The angle, which appeared to be building toward a reunion, was dropped abruptly following her departure.

Meltzer also added that the reasoning behind WWE releases is often not fully disclosed to talent.

“Talent is rarely told the actual reason they are let go past budgeting purposes.”

Previous reporting from Fightful Select indicated there was significant shock within WWE over the decision, particularly given Sane’s role in current programming.

With the situation now clarified, the focus shifts to Sane’s next move following her exit from WWE, as speculation continues about a potential return to Japan or opportunities elsewhere.
