Nigel McGuinness was reportedly dealing with a legitimate foot injury throughout much of the AEW Continental Challenge Cup, with the company ultimately incorporating the issue into his tournament storyline.
The injury became an increasingly important part of McGuinness’ journey through the tournament as he advanced all the way to the finals at AEW All In: London 2026 on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.
McGuinness ultimately came up short against Jon Moxley in the tournament final, tapping out to an ankle lock. While the condition of his foot played directly into the finish, it turns out the injury itself was legitimate.
According to Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline.com, McGuinness suffered the injury earlier in the tournament and AEW subsequently worked it into his matches as he continued toward Wembley Stadium. “So as it turns out, Nigel legit hurt his foot in the tournament and they turned it into a storyline to get through to Wembley,” Alvarez wrote.
The injury reportedly occurred during McGuinness’ first-round match against Katsuyori Shibata at the August 12 AEW Collision taping. The bout later aired on August 15. Despite the setback, McGuinness remained in the tournament and continued competing.
He defeated Hechicero in the quarterfinals on the August 19 edition of AEW Dynamite in Baltimore before advancing to face Kyle O’Reilly in the semifinals. McGuinness then defeated O’Reilly on August 26 in Glasgow, Scotland, earning his place opposite Moxley in the Continental Challenge Cup final at All In.
AEW’s decision to incorporate McGuinness’ legitimate injury into the storyline ultimately added another layer to his tournament run, culminating with Moxley targeting the affected area and forcing him to submit to an ankle lock at Wembley Stadium.
