Myron Reed has responded to criticism surrounding a dangerous-looking spot from his TNT Championship match against Darby Allin on the September 19 episode of AEW Collision.
Allin successfully retained the TNT Championship against Reed, but one moment from the match generated considerable discussion online. Reed attempted a dive to the outside and crashed through a chair, leading several wrestling veterans to question the risks involved.
Former WCW star Crowbar argued that AEW should be willing to step in and prevent talented performers from taking unnecessary risks. “Protect your extremely talented investments who can build your company around – don’t be afraid to tell them ‘No’ …..so they’re there for years to come.”
Disco Inferno was even more critical of the spot, questioning whether that style of performance should be presented as professional wrestling. “If these kids want to use a platform where people can see them try to cripple themselves, there needs to be a discussion on what you think your audience is, and what you should be doing to entertain them. This isn’t wrestling.”
Reed subsequently responded to the criticism, stressing that he trains extensively to execute spots that appear dangerous while remaining safe. He also encouraged viewers to watch the entire match rather than judging his performance based on one viral clip. “When you put the pro in professional wrestler I train very hard to do stuff that looks gnarly, safe. No one works harder than the #YUNGGOAT. Also, go watch the entire match, not just the clip. I’m cooking here, stay tuned. ”
Reed also received support from his partner Zachary Wentz, who praised his growth as a performer and predicted that he will eventually become a World Champion. “Myron is incredible. He had an opportunity to match an ex AEW champion, notoriously known to go crazy and did. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him grow from a boy to a man and I couldn’t be more proud. Myron will be a world champion one day. I promise you that.”
The exchange has added to the long-running debate surrounding high-risk spots in professional wrestling, with Reed making it clear that he stands behind his performance against Allin.
