Grayson Waller believes nobody should be surprised to see him sitting atop WWE NXT after capturing the brand’s top championship at Heatwave.

Waller returned to NXT several weeks ago and immediately put the men’s division on notice with a scathing promo. After spending the past several years on WWE’s main roster, Waller made it clear that he had unfinished business on the brand where he first established himself. Specifically, Waller wanted to accomplish something that eluded him during his original NXT run — becoming NXT Champion.

That goal was finally achieved at Sunday’s WWE NXT Heatwave 2026, where Waller defeated Tony D’Angelo, Zilla Fatu and Cruz Montana in a Fatal Four-Way match to capture the NXT Championship for the first time.

Following his victory, Waller appeared in a video shared across NXT’s social media channels and made it clear that he never returned simply to become another name on the roster. “I’m not surprised, are you?” Waller said. “I didn’t come back here to be another number.” Waller also addressed the perception that returning to NXT after competing on RAW and SmackDown represents a step backwards in his WWE career.

The newly crowned champion rejected that suggestion and instead characterized his return as a calculated risk that ultimately paid off. “I didn’t get demoted,” he continued. “I took the risk, I came back. You’re welcome.”

The victory marks Waller’s first reign as NXT Champion and allows him to finally secure the major accomplishment that was missing from his original run with the brand.

After returning to NXT with the championship firmly in his sights, Waller needed only a matter of weeks to accomplish his goal. Now that he has reached the top, the outspoken Australian enters his first reign with no shortage of confidence — and a target firmly on his back.
