WWE legend John Cena reflected on his iconic career and future during a candid discussion at the Philadelphia Fan Expo panel this past weekend, offering fans insights into his most memorable rivalries and his emotional decision to step away from in-ring competition.
When asked about his favorite feuds throughout his legendary run, Cena singled out a few that stood out not just for their intensity but also for their impact on WWE fans.
“Man, I guess our goal is performance, is to try to get you guys interested,” Cena began. “And I think some of the most interesting ones over the years might have been The Rock, CM Punk. And, you know, I don’t know the third one, I’ll leave up to the fans.”
Cena’s battles with The Rock headlined back-to-back WrestleMania events in 2012 and 2013, while his critically acclaimed feud with CM Punk is widely considered one of the defining rivalries of the modern WWE era.
Turning the conversation to his retirement, Cena became more introspective, revealing that his decision to step away from WWE was shaped by a promise he made to the WWE Universe more than two decades ago.
“It’s pretty easy because of a promise I made to you guys, 25 years ago,” Cena explained. “When I started getting some steam in this business, I promised the audience that when I was a step slower, it was time to step away.”
“It’s not that I don’t have passion. I wish I could do this for infinity, but young performers are fantastic, and given the speed and the ability that they have, I can feel I’m a step slower. And now, for me, is the perfect time to step away, regardless of how much I want to be there.”
Cena added that the WWE Universe’s unwavering support has played a vital role in keeping him honest and grounded throughout his career.
“It’s so easy because you guys have held me accountable, and you allow me to make that promise to you guys. So I know it’s time to step away.”
As Cena continues his transition into Hollywood and other endeavors, fans are left to celebrate the legacy of a Superstar who has given everything to the WWE Universe — and who exits the ring on his own terms, with gratitude and respect.
