Matt Hardy Says Jey Uso’s Title Reign Proves He’s “Not Buried”

“Main Event” Jey Uso’s emotional journey to the top of WWE reached its peak at WrestleMania 41, when he defeated GUNTHER to capture the World Heavyweight Championship in a moment years in the making. But just 51 days later, on the June 9 episode of Monday Night Raw, GUNTHER reclaimed the gold—abruptly ending Jey’s reign and triggering mixed reactions across the WWE Universe.

While some fans have voiced frustration over how quickly the title was taken off the fan-favorite, wrestling legend Matt Hardy believes the reign accomplished its purpose and should be celebrated—not criticized.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Hardy shared a strong defense of Jey’s championship run, stating that the experience elevated him and gave fans a glimpse of his potential at the top of the card.

“Well, I’m glad he got his title reign. I’m glad they let him go out there and do his thing, and they elevated him,” Hardy said. “I feel like he deserved an opportunity just to see how far he could get, how big he could get over, because he does have an emotional connection with so many WWE fans.”

Hardy went on to reject the idea that a short reign equals failure, stating that just holding the world title means a superstar is far from “buried.”

“The fact that he had that run and lost it back to GUNTHER—even in that fashion—I like all that. I’m fine with all that. It’s going to be interesting to see what’s next with Jey,” Hardy continued. “It’s just nice that he was able to dip his toe into the waters of a main event player. He earned that, and I’m glad he got the opportunity… No, he’s not buried. If you’ve been awarded the world title, you are definitely not buried.”

Looking ahead, Hardy teased the possibility of a renewed tag team run with Jimmy Uso, while also suggesting that GUNTHER’s quick rebound win could serve as a major step in cementing his own legendary status.

“If it’s done the right way, this could be huge for GUNTHER. I think he could grow his legend and his legacy.”

As WWE heads into the summer with GUNTHER once again on top, all eyes will be on what comes next for Jey Uso—and whether this chapter was just the beginning of his main event legacy.
