The massive success of the El Grande Americano character in AAA, along with the recent announcement of a tournament to determine a Mexican contender for Roman Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship, has led many fans to speculate that Americano (Ludwig Kaiser) might win and receive another push on the WWE main roster.
However, Dave Meltzer stated in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that rumors of this nature are unfounded. He pointed out that the promotional material for the tournament did not even feature Americano, instead highlighting Penta, La Parka, El Fiscal, El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., Dragon Lee, Fenix, Psycho Clown, and Laredo Kid.
While there’s no guarantee that the winner will come from this group, Meltzer noted that Penta is the only one among them who has been pushed at a level that would make sense for a WWE title match. Given that Penta recently lost the Intercontinental Title, it seems logical for WWE to elevate him into the World Championship scene. In contrast, it is less likely that they would consider someone like El Fiscal, who is relatively unknown to WWE main roster fans.
Furthermore, with Reigns appearing to overlook WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio as the storyline General Manager for AAA, the tournament angle doesn’t seem to benefit AAA significantly. Therefore, it makes sense that a contender with more ties to WWE emerges as the winner.
