Former WWE writer Tommy Blacha appeared on Talk Is Jericho to discuss several topics, including the filming of the infamous Steve Austin hit-and-run angle for Survivor Series 1999.
Blacha said, โWe got a call Saturday. Austin hurt his neck.โ It could have been me, it could have been Gewirtz, someone says, โHow about Austin gets hit by a car.โ Great. Austin gets hit by a car, and weโll do the show. Some stunt man is coming in. I used to work at Joe Louis Arena as a kid, running hot dogs. โWe should do it down here.โ โTheyโre doing construction. There is a chainlink fence.โ This is whatโs great about wrestling. โHave them tear all that down.โ There is so much money and relationships with the arenas that you can do anything. The manager of the arena is there, โDo whatever the fuck he wants and theyโll pay for it.โ There is a stuntman, and theyโre shaving his head. He came from California. We gotta get this early and then run the tape to the truck to play it like itโs real. โWe need this long shot.โ This guy is like, โI need pads. I canโt do this like this.โ Vince was there, and I said, โIf you donโt do it, Iโm going to get a flannel shirt on and put padding on. Iโll do it.โ Vince goes, โItโs settled. Heโll do it!โ โDid I just talk myself into getting hit by a car?โ I guess I would do it, I donโt know. The guy did it, and it worked out great.โ
