Former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre may be focusing on his Hollywood career, but the Scottish star has revealed that his desire to wrestle became so strong that he found himself back inside a ring while filming overseas.
McIntyre has been absent from WWE television since WrestleMania 42, where he suffered a defeat to Jacob Fatu. Since then, he has pursued acting opportunities, including roles in Highlander and The Last Druid.
During a recent appearance on Busted Open Radio, McIntyre was asked by Bully Ray whether he was beginning to miss professional wrestling.
McIntyre admitted that he had already started getting back into the ring during his time away from WWE. “Oh yeah. I had an itch so bad that I’ve been getting back in the ring and just moving around,” McIntyre said. “I spent three months in Barcelona filming ‘The Last Druid’ after I finished ‘Highlander.’ I literally lived there for three months, and I said, ‘I can’t do this. I have to get in the ring.’”
McIntyre explained that he discovered an opportunity to train after learning that one of the stunt performers working on the film was also involved in the local independent wrestling scene. “One of the extras, a stuntman, was a local indie guy, and they told me they had a ring there. I went down and just started rolling around in the ring.”
The former WWE Champion jokingly admitted that his intense wrestling style may have made those informal training sessions particularly challenging for the local wrestlers involved. “I was beating up some of his guys just to get my fix. I feel bad for those guys with the way I wrestle. I practice the way I play, so I’m beating the crap out of them with no cameras there.”
Despite his enthusiasm for returning to the ring, McIntyre has made it clear in recent interviews that he intends to make his eventual WWE comeback on his own terms.
The Scottish star has also embraced his acting career, referring to himself as “Hollywood Drew” while discussing his work outside professional wrestling.
As previously reported by PWMania.com, McIntyre recently addressed his WWE future in a separate interview, promising that his eventual return would be a significant moment.
Although he has resumed some in-ring activity away from WWE, McIntyre has not announced an official date for his return to television.
