Backstage News On How WWE’s AAA Deal Came Together

On Saturday, WWE officially announced its acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA, a landmark move in the global wrestling landscape. The announcement coincided with the reveal of Worlds Collide, a cross-promotional event between WWE NXT and AAA, scheduled to take place on June 7th.

The deal, first hinted at by WrestleVotes, was later confirmed by WWE. According to Fightful Select, talks between the two promotions had been ongoing for years, but gained serious momentum after the WWE-TKO merger. A source noted, “once the merger happened, there was a lot of discussion about that partnership being with WWE.”

Interestingly, sources believe the acquisition may have been finalized shortly after AEW and CMLL announced their Arena Mexico collaboration, implying that WWE’s timing was at least partially strategic in responding to rival expansion efforts.

Despite the historic announcement, not all AAA talent were convinced. Some expressed skepticism, particularly over whether the Roldan family—who have traditionally held tight control of AAA—would truly relinquish ownership. As of now, specific terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed.

WWE’s move marks a major step in its global expansion strategy, following similar partnerships and acquisitions in the UK, Europe, and Japan. The upcoming Worlds Collide event is expected to offer a glimpse into what this new era of AAA-WWE collaboration might look like.
