Backstage News On Rey Mysterio’s WWE In-Ring Return Following Injury

WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio is expected to return to in-ring competition this August, according to a new update from close friend and wrestling veteran Konnan on the Keepin’ It 100 podcast.

Mysterio has been sidelined since the April 18th, 2025 edition of SmackDown, where he sustained a torn groin during a six-man tag match. Teaming with Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix, Mysterio faced off against the American Made faction (Chad Gable, Julius Creed & Brutus Creed) in what was supposed to serve as his final hype appearance before WrestleMania 41.

The injury not only took Mysterio out of that bout but also forced WWE to remove him from his high-profile WrestleMania clash with El Grande Americano—a masked persona revealed to be Chad Gable. Rey Fenix ultimately filled in for the match on short notice.

Konnan confirmed that Mysterio is rehabbing well and should be physically cleared by August, just weeks after SummerSlam.

In addition to the groin tear, Mysterio later revealed he was also recovering from a busted eardrum, adding to the severity of his condition. Despite the physical setback, Mysterio has remained active with non-wrestling appearances, including his cameo at the WWE x AAA Worlds Collide event on June 7 in Los Angeles. There, he opened the show with a heartfelt address, highlighting the historical significance of the crossover PLE.

As WWE continues to navigate its Lucha Libre Renaissance era, Mysterio’s anticipated return could inject major momentum into SmackDown’s ongoing feud between American Made and Mexico’s top luchadores.
