Backstage News On Tama Tonga Signing With WWE

As PWMania.com previously reported, Tama Tonga made his WWE debut on this week’s SmackDown. He aligned himself with Solo Sikoa to join the Bloodline and took Jimmy Uso out.

According to Fightful Select, WWE has been interested in Tonga for quite some time now, with the company showing interest in the former 7-time IWGP Tag Team Champion all the way back in 2006 when they signed AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows and Shinsuke Nakamura. Tonga of course chose to stay in NJPW at that time in order to work with his brothers Hikuleo and Tanga Loa.

WWE had interest in Hikuleo and Tonga sometime last year, but the hiring freeze that occurred when Vince McMahon worked his way back into the company prevented that from happening. There is no word yet on if Tonga had any talks with AEW before signing with WWE, but it was reportedly considered a foregone conclusion that he was coming to WWE where he has always had a positive relationship with.

There is no word yet on whether WWE is interested in Hikuleo or Tanga Loa, but Jacob Fatu has already signed with the company and was backstage at WrestleMania.

There was an idea being tossed around in the company of having Fatu and Tonga team up much like their fathers Tonga Kid and Haku did, but it is not clear if that is a working plan.
