Chelsea Green is reportedly expected to remain Interim WWE Women’s Champion despite suffering a broken orbital bone on SmackDown.
Green sustained the injury during the August 7 episode, where she teamed with Tiffany Stratton in a loss to WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid. She subsequently confirmed that she had suffered a broken orbital bone.
According to WrestleVotes Radio, the injury is expected to keep Green out of the ring for several weeks. However, WWE is not currently planning to strip her of the Interim WWE Women’s Championship.
Green is also expected to remain part of WWE television while she recovers, with the report indicating that she is scheduled to appear on the August 14 episode of SmackDown.
The decision comes shortly after Green captured the championship at SummerSlam, winning a five-way ladder match against Tiffany Stratton, Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill and Lash Legend.
According to WrestleVotes, WWE officials were particularly impressed by the level of social media engagement generated by Green’s championship victory.
That reaction appears to be another positive sign for Green following years of being primarily positioned as a comedic character. Her SummerSlam victory represented the biggest championship win of her WWE career, and she has recently spoken about the strong fan support she has received.
For now, WWE reportedly intends to work around Green’s injury rather than bring her reign to an early end.
There is currently no exact timetable for her in-ring return, but she is expected to miss several weeks while remaining on television as Interim WWE Women’s Champion.
