Drew McIntyre is still feeling the effects of his punishing Hell in a Cell match against CM Punk at WWE Bad Blood 2024, and while fans remember the brutal steel step bump, McIntyre says it’s not a risk he plans to repeat.
Appearing on the Gorilla Position podcast, McIntyre opened up about the painful—and dangerous—moment where he took a direct bump onto the steel steps during the match.
“I got lucky,” McIntyre admitted. “I was convinced I could do it as safely as possible and I did, but it’s not a risk I’ll ever take again. It’s the risk for that match, for that moment.”
The match, hailed as one of the most emotionally intense encounters of the year, marked a dream scenario for the Scottish Warrior.
“This is the match I’ve been looking for in my whole life,” he said. “As a kid, I used to always love those final blowoff matches.”
McIntyre acknowledged that while the moment delivered a memorable visual for fans, it came at a cost. He landed directly on his lower back—a risk that could have ended far worse.
“A bit stupid,” McIntyre conceded. “But it went as good as it can considering it was legitimately my lower back I landed on. It’s a one and done—will never be done again.”
The former WWE Champion said that despite the toll, he’s proud of the performance and how it resonated with fans.
“For me personally, I’ll look back one day when it’s all over and go, ‘Wow, that was pretty cool.’ And I know a lot of fans out there will feel the same way, especially younger fans who were like me when I was watching as a kid.”
McIntyre continues to be a top-tier presence in WWE, and Bad Blood 2024 served as another powerful chapter in his evolving legacy.
