Inactive WWE Star Wanted Goldberg’s Retirement Match

As confirmed during the June 16th, 2025 edition of WWE RAW, the long-anticipated dream match between World Heavyweight Champion Gunther and WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg is now official. The two will collide at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12th in Atlanta, Georgia, a fitting location for what is expected to be Goldberg’s final match.

The showdown was made official following a fiery segment on RAW, where Goldberg interrupted Gunther and declared, “You’re next!” WWE later confirmed the match during the broadcast.

In the aftermath of the announcement, former WWE Champion Big E shared his emotional reaction to the news during the RAW Recap podcast. A self-professed lifelong Goldberg fan, Big E reflected on the personal impact the WCW icon had on his wrestling fandom.

“Look, it was like I was 13 years old once again. It was like, I hearken back to him winning the title at the Georgia Dome. I met this man at a Walmart signing like 25 years ago. We got to do a Hot Ones together. My wrestling fandom is so deeply connected to this man.”

Big E also acknowledged his own desire to face Goldberg in a retirement match — a dream that now appears to be off the table.

“I wanted his retirement match. That’s obviously off the table. I will say, if this is indeed it, Gunther is so intriguing. I love the clash of eras.”

He closed by praising Gunther’s legitimacy and presence, saying:

“Seeing Jey [Uso] not have the title is disappointing. But I want to see Gunther be in the ring with the biggest fish.”

Gunther vs. Goldberg is shaping up to be a generational clash with massive stakes and emotional weight. The match will take place in Goldberg’s home state of Georgia, promising an electric atmosphere for what could be his last ride.
