AEW star MJF is once again at the center of controversy, this time for his heavily criticized segment during this week’s AEW Grand Slam Mexico special. The polarizing angle not only drew major heat from the live crowd at Arena México but also reportedly led to a fan confrontation at his hotel after the show.
According to Fightful Select, a source within AEW stated that MJF was “went after” by a fan at the hotel following his post-match antics in Mexico City. Fortunately, the former AEW World Champion was unharmed in the encounter and laughed off the situation, reportedly proud that his heel work drew such a strong response.
The segment that sparked the controversy saw MJF appear in red, white, and blue gear, waving the American flag in the middle of the ring before deliberately getting disqualified in his match. He then escalated tensions by unmasking lucha libre legend Mistico and placing the mask on himself, a major sign of disrespect in lucha culture.
MJF has leaned into the angle in recent weeks, cutting increasingly inflammatory promos aimed at Mistico and the Mexican fanbase to build heat for his new alliance with The Hurt Syndicate.
