Lucha Libre legend Konnan recently appeared on an episode of his podcast, Keepin’ It 100, where he discussed several topics. He revealed that he was not the first choice for the WWE x AAA Worlds Collide event that took place on June 7th. Instead, the company initially wanted Mike Tenay to be part of the broadcast team for the show.
Konnan said, “I was not the number one option. 100% [it was Tenay]. I think I heard one thing that maybe they didn’t come to a money agreement, which I find hard to believe. They were wondering after so many years if he could still do it for two-and-a-half hours or whatever it was, but I’ll ask, I’ll find out, and I’ll let you know. I don’t know the real reason, but I was not number one, two or three really.”
On how over Iguana was at worlds collide:
“He was super over. They were chanting, ‘Iguana! Iguana!’”
On how Iguana has a unique character:
“In Iguana’s case, nobody looks like him. He [is] different,” Konnan stated. “Remember when WWE was pure gimmicks 30 years ago? You know, Repo Man. The Brooklyn Brawler. … Back then, there were so many gimmicks nobody stuck out, right? Since there [are] few gimmicks, he [stands] out, right? And he’s a merchandise bonanza with the iguana. I really believe that he’ll get over in WWE.”
Konnan worked the announce booth alongside Corey Graves. Tenay, known for his run in WCW and TNA, has not worked in the pro wrestling business since he left TNA in 2016. He was inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame alongside the late Don West in 2023.
