WWE veteran Baron Corbin defeated Trick Williams on the second night of WWE SummerSlam this past weekend to win the United States Championship. This victory marked Corbin’s first official match back with the company since his return in mid-July. The win ended Williams’ reign at 105 days, which began when he won the title from Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 42.
According to Wrestlevotes Radio on Fightful Select, Corbin’s victory surprised several people backstage. The report also noted that when Williams received his custom fur-lined WWE United States Championship from Lil Yachty in the same episode where Corbin returned, there was no expectation among company officials that Williams would lose the title so soon.
Additionally, the report stated that the decision to give the title back to Corbin came together “only recently.” Corbin’s comeback to the company followed a year and a half away, and this win marks his second reign with the title, having previously held it for a couple of months in 2017.
