Chelsea Green says she considered taking her WWE character in a more serious direction and even discussed the idea with Triple H, only for her booking the following week to effectively answer the question for them.
Green became the Interim WWE Women’s Champion at SummerSlam Sunday, winning a five-way ladder match. Speaking with Complex Graps, she was asked whether she had ever considered changing the character that has become synonymous with her WWE run.
Green revealed that the possibility was seriously discussed around a year ago. “About a year ago, I had a conversation with Hunter [Triple H]. We sat down and talked about me going in a more serious direction.”
The conversation apparently did not translate to television. Green recalled being placed straight back into the type of comedy role they had just discussed moving away from. “Literally the next week, I was put in a comedy spot that lasted like 30 seconds, and I was pinned. I’m like, ‘Well, I fear we’re here to stay.’”
According to Green, that was effectively the end of the discussion. “And him and I never spoke about it again.”
Looking back, Green finds the contrast between their conversation and what happened immediately afterward particularly amusing. “It’s such a funny conversation to think about because we were like, ‘Yeah, and I’ll stop doing this, and I’ll stop doing that, and I’ll look more serious, and I’ll be more serious, and I’ll do my moves.’”
Instead, Green believes she was promptly put into another losing situation. “And then I literally believe I went and took the Jaded.”
In hindsight, Green believes sticking with the character was the right decision. Rather than attempting to become a more conventional serious wrestler, she has embraced the role that distinguishes her from the rest of WWE’s women’s division. “I feel like I found my niche. I found my lane. And, like, why did I try to get out of the lane? The lane works. It’s my lane. I made the lane. I’m going to stay in the lane.”
Green said other wrestlers are welcome to attempt something similar, but she is confident nobody can play that particular role better than she can. “I invite others to come in and try it. But at the end of the day, I know that what I do, I do it better than anyone else.”
She believes the authenticity of the character is also what eventually caused WWE audiences to embrace her organically. “That’s why it works. And that’s why people believe it. And that’s why they turned me babyface naturally, because everyone was like, ‘Wait, this is so stupid… we like it. She’s so annoying. We like it.’”
Green’s decision to remain in that lane has now taken her to the top of WWE’s women’s division, with her SummerSlam victory marking her first reign as Interim WWE Women’s Champion.
