According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, former AEW Women’s World Champion Jamie Hayter was already injured before stepping into the ring with Mercedes Mone at AEW Double or Nothing.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer clarified that Hayter’s injury was not sustained during the match itself but that she entered the bout already hurt — a situation AEW later used to build a storyline explanation for her absence.
“She was hurt in the Mercedes Mone match,” Meltzer said. “When they did the Thekla injury angle, that was set up to cover for her injury and give her a storyline reason to be out.”
The post-match segment on AEW Dynamite, which featured Thekla making her debut by attacking Hayter, was reportedly booked specifically to write Hayter off television while she recovers.
“That was the reason it wasn’t followed up on, because she actually went into it hurt,” Meltzer added.
There is currently no official word on the nature or severity of Hayter’s injury, nor a timetable for her return. The former champion has battled injuries in the past, and fans will no doubt be hoping for a speedy recovery as AEW’s women’s division continues to grow.
