Penta is reportedly the backstage favorite to win WWE’s upcoming luchador tournament and challenge Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship in Mexico City.
Rey Mysterio recently announced the tournament in his role as AAA General Manager, with competitors from Raw, SmackDown and AAA taking part. The winner will receive a championship match against Reigns on the September 14 episode of Raw at Arena CDMX.
According to WrestleVotes Radio, the current backstage expectation is that Penta will win the tournament.
The announced first-round matches are Penta vs. Laredo Kid, Psycho Clown vs. La Parka, Dragon Lee vs. El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. and Rey Fenix vs. El Fiscal.
If those plans remain in place, Penta would advance through the tournament and receive a major World Heavyweight Championship opportunity against Reigns in his home country.
WWE also appears to already be discussing what comes next for Reigns.
WrestleVotes reports that Reigns vs. LA Knight is being discussed for Money in the Bank on October 10. There is reportedly a “strong feeling” internally that the match will happen, with Reigns expected to enter the event still holding the World Heavyweight Championship.
That would indicate WWE currently expects Reigns to successfully defend against the winner of the luchador tournament in Mexico City.
A Reigns-Knight program has already been teased on Raw in recent weeks, although WWE has yet to officially announce the match for Money in the Bank.
Reigns’ schedule extends beyond October as well. WWE has officially advertised him for Survivor Series: WarGames on November 28 at Daikin Park in Houston, where he is currently the only wrestler featured on the event artwork.
No match has been announced for Survivor Series, but Reigns has become a regular part of WWE’s WarGames presentation in recent years, competing in the men’s match in 2022, 2024 and 2025.
For now, the reported direction has Penta emerging from the tournament to challenge Reigns in Mexico City, followed by Reigns defending against LA Knight at Money in the Bank if WWE proceeds with its current plans.
