A new report has clarified the situation regarding Shayna Baszler’s involvement backstage in WWE, following speculation that the former NXT Women’s Champion had transitioned into a full-time producer role.
Baszler was recently credited as the producer for the Kelani Jordan vs. Lainey Reid match on this week’s episode of WWE NXT, leading to online buzz that she may have taken an official job behind the scenes.
However, on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer shut down those rumors, explaining:
“She’s got another month. I think the date is August 2 when her 90 days is up, so she can’t wrestle anywhere until August 2… She’s been at NXT tapings. She has agented other matches, but this is the first one to come out. It’s not like she’s taken a job as an agent. She is doing it since she’s around and they’ve asked her.”
Baszler’s WWE contract officially ends August 2, and while she is temporarily contributing as a backstage producer, she has not signed on in any official capacity. Her involvement is believed to be more of a placeholder while she weighs her next move.
With her MMA credentials, legitimate grappling background, and dominant NXT legacy, Baszler is expected to be a top free-agent name once her non-compete expires. Both AEW and TNA Wrestling could be viable options if she chooses not to re-sign with WWE.
