Nick Aldis Explains Creative Input Behind SmackDown Debut Segment

SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis appeared on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, where he talked about a number of topics including working opposite Dominik Mysterio in a segment.

Aldis said, โ€œIf โ€˜Dirtyโ€™ Dom Mysterio hadnโ€™t been in that segment, it would have been a much more difficult position for me to get that one thing, which was the โ€˜big fan of your dadโ€™ line. When I was looking over it during the day, Iโ€™m brand new, but Iโ€™m also a producer so I have a bit of freedom and leeway to make suggestions. I remember looking at the way it was laid out, and I saw the suggestion of โ€˜big fan.โ€™ I was like, โ€˜What if I put a pause in there?โ€™ In my mind, thatโ€™s my sense of humor and s**t-talker style. โ€˜Big fanโ€ฆof your dad.โ€™ I said it and Hunter and whoever was around at the time laughed. I was like, โ€˜That might work.โ€™โ€

On making his debut in the segment:

โ€œLooking at it, the segment isnโ€™t necessarily about me. Iโ€™m here to facilitate. At the same time, Iโ€™ve got ten seconds to smash something. Thatโ€™s it. Thatโ€™s my kick-the-door-down moment. I knew I had to do that. I knew the majority of people watching didnโ€™t know who I was. I would have loved to debuted in Chicago or New York or Philly where there may have been a higher concentration of fans who were familiar. Tulsa, Oklahoma, not what I would describe as my strongest market, brother, but Iโ€™ll take it. Dom has so much heat and heโ€™s the guy you love to hate. That is the sweet spot, especially in the modern era, thatโ€™s the sweet spot as a heel character. You have to be the guy they love to hate. Itโ€™s hard now to have real heat because real heat becomes, โ€˜is it real?โ€™ We donโ€™t want to have a disclaimer, โ€˜Oh, itโ€™s not real.โ€™ That ruins the whole thing. You have to be a guy they love to hate. Thatโ€™s Dirty Dom.โ€
