With Goldberg’s highly anticipated retirement match against Gunther for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship set to headline Saturday Night’s Main Event, the panel on Busted Open Radio dove into a fiery discussion over the match’s stakes, purpose—and controversial possibilities.
Host Dave LaGreca voiced skepticism over the match’s business upside if it doesn’t result in a major draw.
“You brought Goldberg back, why?” LaGreca asked. “If you’re only bringing him back for one match, it’s to pop a rating and to pop attendance. Well, right now they’re not sold out… if you’re not going to get a huge rating and you’re not going to get a sold out crowd, then why’d you bring Goldberg back?”
Guest panelist Bishop Dyer threw fuel on the fire with a heelish suggestion.
“Put the title on him, baby. Let’s go,” Dyer laughed. “Just to irritate everyone. I mean… I’m naturally a bad guy.”
He added that the fan backlash would be worth it for the chaos alone:
“Goldberg winning the title… you imagine the meltdown people are going to have.”
Wrestling legend Tommy Dreamer took the scenario a step further, imagining a Goldberg win being the perfect setup for a surprise cash-in or challenge from Jey Uso.
“If [Jey] is the one who beats the guy who beat the guy that beat him,” Dreamer explained, “this is now your new crown guy.”
The World Heavyweight Championship bout between Gunther and Goldberg is being billed as the final match of Goldberg’s career. It airs live this Saturday on NBC and Peacock, and regardless of the outcome, the match has already sparked some of the most heated fan and industry debate in recent memory.
