WWE star Cody Rhodes recently spoke with Sporf’s James Sweetnam about various topics, including a mischievous prank that Triple H pulled on him years ago.
Rhodes said, “That was a bad rib. And I think he knew it was a bad rib, but we were somewhere overseas. We might have been in Belfast. Belfast or Dublin. And they had done they were on the DX tour, so they had added a banner to the pipe and drape where they would come out, and it was all white, and they spray-painted DX on it, but it was only held by this, like, one 2×4 on top of it, draping it over. And I think he saw that and thought, “Hey, you should rip that down.” I don’t even know if it started as a rip. Or maybe he set this whole thing up. He probably did. ‘You should rip that down. And that’ll you’ll be mad.’ Me and my partner at the time when we were in Legacy with Randy.”
On how the DX spray paint got all over him:
“So anyways, I come out, and I rip the thing down, and the 2×4 came forward, and it just went *pop* right in the back of the head, and it popped me in the back of the head. So now I’m jarred, and people are laughing at me, but also the speckled spray paint covered my body. So I got in the ring, and I was just covered — like you slimed me basically, and him and Shawn just pointed and laughed at me, which was — I learned a lot.”
On where he wore a face mask as part of a storyline:
“You know, a little inside baseball on that that was really nice was that was a moment in time where I was given a lot of freedom, a lot of latitude. I remember Michael Hayes was the head writer on Smackdown, and I was given a lot of latitude to create something on my own and wrestling is always best when these organic moments happen you know so my nose gets actually broken by Rey Mysterio but then the idea of being disfigured even when you’re not disfigured that almost body dysmorphia and what it would do it was just really a deep place to go early in my career and then you’re able to have fun with it and put bags on people’s heads and you know they always would get mad at me backstage because I wouldn’t put them on the ugly people, but that’s because I’m not going to seek someone out and shove a bag on their head. That seems like assault versus the fans in the crowd. They’re like, ‘I want the bag.’ It was always a bit.”
On the impact Rey Mysterio had on his career:
“Rey has. I tell him, I don’t think he believes me. I tell Dom [Mysterio], I don’t think they believe me in terms of nothing happens in my career without Rey Mysterio wanting to wrestle against me at WrestleMania in my hometown here in Atlanta. And everything stems out of that moment. And not just that, Rey, you know, because we’re talking Clash of Clans today, too. Former Minion Prince himself, Rey Mysterio is a timeless, really timeless, timeless character and always somehow involved in my life. I mean, this watch I’m wearing, I got from a jeweler that Rey Mysterio recommended. So, I guess he’s more part of my life than I realize, but definitely my career doesn’t happen without him.”
