Mercedes Moné’s undefeated run in AEW has been a major topic of discussion among fans—and now, new backstage details shed light on the creative decisions behind her winning streak and what’s ahead for her at All In: Wembley Stadium.
According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the reigning TBS Champion was originally open to taking a loss in AEW, particularly against Athena, to help build a future storyline. However, those plans were ultimately altered to protect Moné’s momentum heading into AEW’s biggest show of the year.
“Regarding Mercedes Moné not having lost in AEW since her debut, those close to her say she was willing to lose to Athena to build a rematch at All In,” wrote Dave Meltzer.
Once AEW finalized its direction for All In, the decision was made to keep Moné undefeated en route to a marquee match against Toni Storm for the AEW Women’s World Championship. This strategy also influenced the outcome of her Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final bout against Kris Statlander, where a loss would have disrupted the long-term booking.
Interestingly, the report also revealed that Toni Storm was not the original opponent planned for Moné at Wembley.
“The original idea months back still involved Mariah May for the stadium show, but obviously that was changed when May wasn’t going to sign a new deal, so they wanted to do the biggest match for women in the company on the biggest show.”
May has since signed with WWE earlier this month, forcing AEW to pivot and elevate Storm into the spotlight for the highly anticipated women’s title clash.
