WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long recently opened up about a memorable backstage moment involving Hardcore Holly during the infamous “White Boy Challenge” storyline in WWE, showcasing just how committed Holly was to selling the angle on TV.
Speaking on his “Road Trip After Hours” podcast, Long was asked if any superstars had ever objected to the racially charged storyline, which featured Rodney Mack facing off against white wrestlers in a weekly challenge. While Long didn’t recall many objections, he spotlighted one surprising name who fully embraced the controversial concept—Bob Holly.
“That was one guy that was very cooperative. Me and him are good friends, and that was Bob Holly,” Long said.
Long then shared a vivid memory from one of the segments:
“I’ll never forget—I was doing the White Boy Challenge, and I was working with Bob Holly. Rodney was [there], and Bob was on the outside, laying by the announce table. He calls me and says, ‘Teddy, Teddy. Slap the sht out of me. Slap the sht out of me.’ And I’m looking at him like, what? And he’s like, ‘Come on, come on, you know.’ So I slapped him.”
But the intensity didn’t stop there. Long went straight into his next cue, which added more heat to the moment.
“Then my cue was to run to the announcer’s microphone and say, ‘I just slapped the cracker. Tell them, tell them—I just slapped the cracker.’ And Bob Holly let me do that.”
Long praised Holly’s professionalism and willingness to help the storyline get over.
“There were a lot of white guys that wouldn’t let a Black guy slap them on TV. But Bob Holly was very cooperative, and I’ll never forget that. He helped that story.”
The White Boy Challenge angle remains one of the more controversial programs from the Ruthless Aggression Era, but Teddy Long’s behind-the-scenes insight shows how some talents went all-in to make it as believable and impactful as possible.
