Top TNA Wrestling star Joe Hendry recently appeared on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, where he talked about a number of topics including his match with WWE and TNA Hall of Famer Kurt Angle in WCPW back in 2016.
Hendry said, โI look back at this and Iโm like, โHow on earth did I have the balls to pull this off?โ A fan asked me, โWhatโs your dream match?โ And I thought and I answered it, saying, well, just like a one-off match and I went Kurt Angle and I tagged him thinking nothing of it. Kurt Angle DMโd me, in 2015. He says, โListen, Iโve heard your name, Iโve seen a couple things,โ โcause I think at that point Iโd done like my first like viral entrance. I came to the ring to โWrecking Ballโ but I came to the ring in a zorb as Henry Ball. And so Kurt said, โI know who you are and youโre not ready yet. But maybe one day youโll get the match,โ and I was like, โWow!’โ
On getting the match booked:
โI walk in the [WhatCulture] boardroom and I says, โThanks for meeting [me]. You guys tried to get Kurt Angle, didnโt you?โ And they went โ and Iโm just a trainee at this point and they went โ โYeah, yeah.โ And I went, โWhat did he say?โ and knowing what he said and they went, โOh, he said no.โ And I went, โI can get you Kurt Angle,โ and I says, โBut if I get him, I need both of your word that I wrestle him,โ and I says, โAnd Iโm top guy after that.โ And Iโm a trainee at the time and they went, โYou can really get Kurt Angle?โ I was like, โThose are the termsโ and they were like, โAlright.โ They shook my hand.โ
On coming up with his character in TNA:
โBefore TNA, I had the gimmick, but not the character. I had custom entrance songs that people enjoyed. Whereas, the character element of who Joe Hendry is on television, that came to be in TNA.โ
On who helped him find his character:
โIt really has taken an army of people to get me to this point, and Iโll shout out many people, but one person Iโm going to shout out first is Eric Young. A few weeks before I got to TNA, me and Eric Young first met on a show in Germany โฆ He helped me understand how I should approach this. So thatโs where it started, and then TNA management have worked very hands-on with me. Itโs just been an incredible learning experience.โ
