In a major shakeup within New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), it was announced early Wednesday morning that Tetsuya Naito is officially departing the promotion, ending one of the most storied tenures in recent NJPW history.
The news was first reported by Tokyo Sports, who revealed that Naito had been working without a contract, sparking immediate speculation online — especially since the report dropped so close to April Fool’s Day. However, it was quickly confirmed to be legitimate.
According to Fightful Select, Naito and NJPW had reached an impasse regarding contract extension negotiations. Sources told Fightful that Naito has been exploring options over the past month.
Despite being plagued by injuries in recent years, Naito has remained a top draw for NJPW, both in Japan and globally. The promotion is currently experiencing a wave of uncertainty, as several top stars are also working without formal contracts.
This isn’t the first time other promotions have pursued Naito. Back in 2018, WWE reportedly expressed interest, but Naito publicly stated that he turned them down. However, Fightful notes that AEW is not expected to be Naito’s next destination, despite speculation. Instead, it appears he may be stepping away — at least temporarily — from full-time wrestling commitments. Still, insiders say a return to NJPW is possible in the future.
Adding to the transition, fellow LIJ member BUSHI is also reportedly leaving NJPW, signaling a significant shift in the promotion’s landscape.
Naito’s final NJPW appearances are set for early May. Whether this is the end of an era or simply a new chapter remains to be seen.
